Forex Reserves

Foreign exchange reserves are foreign currencies, gold and other assets held by the RBI. They pay for imports in a crisis, reassure investors and allow the RBI to sell dollars to slow a falling rupee.

Why It Matters

Large reserves are why India can ride out currency shocks that once caused crises.

In India

India’s reserves hit a record $785.7 billion on September 4, 2026, then fell to about $726 billion by October 9 as the RBI defended the rupee.
