Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB)
Sovereign gold bonds, issued by the RBI on behalf of the government from 2015, track the price of gold and paid 2.5% annual interest. Gains held to maturity were tax-free. The government stopped new issues in 2024.
Why It Matters
SGB holders who bought early have seen large gains as gold prices soared.
In India
An SGB bought in 2017 at under ₹3,000 a gram was worth several times that by late 2025.
