Reciprocal Tariff
A reciprocal tariff is imposed by one country on another in response to that country’s tariffs or trade surplus. The US used this label in 2025 for country-specific tariffs on most of its trading partners.
Why It Matters
Reciprocal tariffs turn trade into a bilateral bargaining game.
In India
In February 2026 the US Supreme Court ruled that the law used to impose these reciprocal tariffs did not authorise them.
