Current Account Deficit

The current account records a country’s trade in goods and services, plus income and transfers such as remittances. A deficit means more money flows out than in. India usually runs a goods trade deficit, partly offset by services exports and remittances.

Why It Matters

A widening current account deficit puts pressure on the currency, because it means the country needs more foreign money.

In India

High oil prices in 2026 widened India’s current account deficit, one reason the rupee fell to record lows.
