Jio files.
The big one.

Jio Platforms filed its draft prospectus with SEBI on June 19. A listing would value India’s largest telecom and digital company among the most valuable firms in the country, and test how much new money Indian markets can absorb at once.

Jio Platforms, the company behind India’s largest mobile network and a growing set of digital businesses, filed its draft red herring prospectus with SEBI on June 19. The filing starts a process that could end in the largest share sale in Indian history. Reliance Industries has signalled the listing for years. Now the paperwork is real.

How Jio got here

Jio launched in 2016 with free voice calls and almost free data, forcing rivals to cut prices and pushing mobile data costs in India among the lowest in the world. Within a few years it became the largest operator by subscribers. In 2020, during the pandemic, it raised huge sums from investors including Meta and Google, which valued it alongside India’s largest companies. An IPO lets those investors, and the public, put a market price on that bet.

What investors will look at

The key number for any telecom company is average revenue per user, or ARPU: how much each subscriber pays per month on average. Indian ARPU is low by global standards, which is both the problem and the opportunity. Every tariff increase drops almost straight into profit, because the network is already built. Investors will want to know how far and how fast prices can rise without customers leaving, and how much money Jio’s 5G rollout, broadband and digital services will eventually earn.

A giant IPO is not only a test of the company. It is a test of how much money the whole market has to spare.

Size brings its own effect. When an issue raises tens of thousands of crores, investors often sell other shares to fund their bids, which can weigh on the rest of the market while the IPO is open. SEBI will now review the filing, a process that usually takes a couple of months. If it is approved, the listing could arrive in the second half of the year, just as the market is still digesting a war, a weak rupee and a cautious RBI.
