Nifty 50

When news anchors say “the market was up today,” they usually mean the Nifty 50 moved higher. The Nifty 50 tracks 50 of the largest companies listed on the National Stock Exchange, weighted by the value of their freely traded shares and rolled into a single number. It is the most widely quoted gauge of the Indian stock market.

Why It Matters

If you own an index mutual fund in India, there is a good chance the Nifty 50 is quietly deciding your returns.

Because the Nifty is dominated by India’s largest companies, banks, IT firms and energy majors among them, it tends to reflect the health of the broader economy more than any single stock could. Fund managers use it as their default benchmark. Beating the Nifty counts as a good year; trailing it counts as a disappointing one.

In India
26,373→26,37352-week high → Oct 9, 2026 low

Over 2026, war in the Gulf, a weak rupee, heavy foreign selling and finally an RBI rate hike pulled the Nifty about 16% below its record. On October 9 it broke below its low for the year. A fall of that size is deeper than a routine correction but short of the 20% that defines a bear market.
