EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment)
An EMI is the fixed amount a borrower pays each month to repay a loan over its term. Early EMIs are mostly interest; later ones are mostly repayment of the original amount. On floating-rate loans, the EMI or the loan term changes when interest rates change.
Why It Matters
For most Indian households, the EMI is the most direct way the RBI’s decisions show up in their lives.
In India
On a ₹50 lakh home loan over 20 years at 8%, the EMI is about ₹41,800. A 0.25% rise in the rate adds roughly ₹800 a month.
