CPI Weights
CPI weights decide how much each category, such as food, housing or fuel, contributes to overall inflation, based on how much households spend on it. Items households spend more on carry larger weights.
Why It Matters
If the weights are out of date, the inflation number measures an old lifestyle.
In India
India’s 2026 CPI revision lowered food’s weight and raised housing’s, reflecting how household spending has shifted over the past decade.
