Chokepoint

A chokepoint is a strait or canal, such as the Strait of Hormuz, Suez Canal or Strait of Malacca, through which a large share of the world’s shipping passes. Disruption at a chokepoint can cut supply and raise prices worldwide.

Why It Matters

A few kilometres of water can decide the price of fuel in a country thousands of kilometres away.

In India

Roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, whose disruption in 2026 caused India’s worst energy shock in decades.
