Bond

A bond is a debt instrument: the issuer borrows money from investors and promises to pay interest, called the coupon, at regular intervals and return the principal at maturity. Bond prices move opposite to interest rates.

Why It Matters

Bonds are usually steadier than shares, which is why they balance a portfolio.

In India

When the RBI cuts rates, existing bonds paying higher coupons become more valuable.
